June has arrived in Huntsville, and with it, our famous Southern heat and humidity. When it’s already 85 degrees by 9 a.m. and the air feels sticky, it’s completely understandable if organizing your garage or tackling a closet isn’t at the top of your to-do list.
But here's the good news: you don’t have to overheat to make real progress at home. Whether you’re unwinding in the AC, relaxing by the pool, or enjoying the shade after a morning hike on Monte Sano, there are small, meaningful ways to declutter and reset—without ever leaving your lawn chair.
Here are a few of my favorite “low-effort, high-impact” organizing projects for these extra-warm summer days:
Our phones carry so much of our lives—and a surprising amount of clutter. A little digital organizing can go a long way in clearing mental space, too. Here are a few things you can do to
Remove apps you no longer use.
Clean out your photo roll (those random screenshots from 2019 can probably go). See below for more tips on organizing photos.
Unsubscribe from newsletters you never read.
Create folders on your home screen to keep things tidy. (See the screenshot below as an example)
Pro tip: Add a glass of tea, your favorite playlist, and a fan — suddenly this becomes a pretty peaceful way
to spend an afternoon.
An overflowing inbox can feel just as stressful as a messy junk drawer. The good news? You don’t need to hit inbox zero—just a little breathing room makes a big difference.
Search for “unsubscribe” or “sale” and mass-delete what you don’t need.
Set up simple filters (think: all receipts in one folder).
Delete or archive emails more than 6 months old (unless they’re important).
Knock out those lingering “I’ll respond later” emails—yes, even the orthodontist’s forms.
This is like shredding old paper clutter—but from the comfort of your couch.
It’s amazing how much better it feels to scroll through a tidy photo library — especially when you’ve just come back from a trip or family gathering.
Delete duplicates, blurry shots, and photos you’ll never use.
Make albums by theme: kids, pets, hikes, birthdays, vacations, etc.
“Favorite” the best pictures from your most recent adventure.
Consider backing up to cloud storage or even ordering a small photo book.
⭐ Bonus: Looking at memories might give you the emotional boost you didn’t know you needed today.
If your brain is full of clutter, planning can be powerful—even if you don’t lift a finger today.
List three spaces in your home that you’d love to get organized
Jot down what isn’t working in each space and what you hope to achieve.
Jot down what IS working in each space and how it might inform other things you could implement.
Note the supplies (or support!) you might need.
Set a “someday” date—but no pressure.
This kind of quiet prep work is exactly what sets you up for success later—especially when you're ready to act once the weather cools off.
Between forgotten carts, random logins, and auto-renewing subscriptions, the digital clutter adds up fast.
Clear out online shopping carts or save the must-haves in a wish list.
Update your payment methods and shipping addresses for that card that’s about to expire.
Cancel free trials or subscriptions you no longer use.
⭐ Bonus: This kind of organizing often saves money, too.
Digital spaces deserve a little love, too—especially if they’re where you go to relax.
Unfollow accounts that add stress or comparison.
Curate your podcast queue or start a fresh summer playlist.
Save inspiring accounts or organizing tips to refer back to later.
This is organizing for your brain—and it’s definitely poolside friendly.
If the heat has you moving slower, that’s okay.
Sometimes the best thing we can do is pause,
breathe, and be still. Take a nap, sit by the water,
or enjoy a quiet hour with your favorite book.
But if you are feeling the itch to get something done from the comfort of your chair, these small steps can help you feel a little more grounded — without ever breaking a sweat.
Because here in Huntsville, we know: summer is about balancing the busy with the beauty. Let’s give ourselves permission to enjoy the season while still making a little quiet progress where we can.
